‘Crewcuts Inspired’ Ribbon Necklace

by Natasha on September 10, 2009 in diy jewelry, jcrew necklace, tutorials

Here’s Jcrew’s Crewcuts ‘Crazy Bead Necklace’ retail: $14.50
And here’s the Samster Mommy Knock-Off cost:$4
How ’bout I show you how to make your own…

You’ll need:
Beads- mine were 10mm clearance beads from Michael’s (49 total)
matching cord/yarn- you can find pretty thin stuff in the knitting section
matching 3/4″ ribbon (30″)
hot glue gun & sticks

Start off with a long piece off your string (eh, around 45″ or so, you just don’t want to run out)
& thread 3 beads onto the center of it
Next you’re going to “weave” one bead on, place one end of your string through the bead, then, from the other direction, thread the other end of the string through the bead…like this…When you pull that bead down to the previously threaded ones it should look like this…You’re going to continue in this pattern of two beads, one bead woven, until your piece reaches 12″, knot the end, don’t worry if it’s not perfect, the ribbon will cover the knot.
I figure things out best when I have a good visual to follow verses words, if you’re like me here’s a pic I did with contrasting beads to help you out.Almost done! Now take your ribbon and cut it into two 14″ strips. Starting on one end of your beaded piece push the ribbon through like so & hot glue it into place. Now take a 1″ piece of ribbon and wrap it around that piece, glue in place. This just makes it look a little more finished.Heat seal your ribbon ends by quickly waving them over a lighter. That’s it! Now go spend that $10 you saved on Chick-fil-a. You deserve it. (:

How in the world did you figure that out??? It turns out so cool when you do that! I'm trying to figure out how to make the Banana Republic Brooch Cluster Necklace. I bet you'd do it lickety split!

Hey Natasha… I have a crafting question for you- you can respond to my email if you don't mind… maegan.bell@gmail.com
I saw recently, online somewhere, a tuturial for a ridiculously cute no sew tutu…. I need to make one asap for Addison for a princess party this weekend… was wondering if you have ever come across this same tutorial?? I can't find it now! The pictures showed a tutu with brown ribbons….. and coordinating aqua (if I'm remembering correctly) tulle… let me know! Thanks!

Your version is far superior, and more expensive looking, hands down. Thanks for sharing. I have to make this!

So I made this the other night. SUPER EASY! Definitely on my list to make for Christmas gifts. I think I'm also going to make a matching bracelet with ribbon woven through the center row… I used white pearl-like beads and black satin ribbon for mine, though I'm going to make a bunch more casual ones.

I found your site through One Pretty Thing but since I'm always linking here from there, I'm bookmarking you directly. 🙂 Love your stuff!

(I'm going to try to link a picture of my finished one… it's taken with my BlackBerry so the quality isn't that great)

so, following a thread on Baby Center about Baby Legs led me here – and I am addicted. Thank you so much for inspiring me to a) get dressed again b) get the sewing machine out and c) start using my brain for something other than baby center posts. My daughter is now almost 5 months old, and her naps are starting to regulate, so being inspired means that I have time to carry something through to completion again!

I will attempt to attach a pic of the bracelet that I made using your pattern as a starting place… but I am a nerd, and it may not work… if it doesn't, sorry, but THANKS!

I made it last night–it took all of 20 minutes and is SO cute! I can't wait to make another!

I was also thinking of making a bracelet using this "pattern" with elastic thread!

Thanks so much for sharing all of your fun crafts!

    Hey Natasha!
I LOVE this idea. I'm hoping to have my Mom's group make this as a craft,so I'm looking for a place to buy glass beads in bulk for a good price. Do you know of any websites that would be good for this? Also, what size beads do I need?

    THANKS!!!

I found your blog through Sealaura. I also love jewelry but don't want to pay the $$ at retailers. Your easy tutorial above is fantastic. I would love to create this in the form of a bracelet! You've opened a new door for me. Thanks!
