DIY Color Sihouettes

by Natasha on March 24, 2011 in tutorials

Awhile back I was reading my favorite home design blog Little Green Notebook & she did a post about Color Silhouettes that an artist named Jonathon Adler was doing, such a neat updated look, no?( Carter Kustera)
I was determined to DIY it & today the stars aligned…both girls napped simultaneously.
I bolted for the paint supplies.

I’ll probably update Soph’s once she gets some more hair & her head is less bulbous.
(Also fingers crossed I’ll have my master bedroom re-do finished in the next week so I can show you the whole room!)

All you’ll need for the silhouette project is:

  • a canvas-size of your choice (40% off at Michaels this past weekend)
  • a printed out profile image of your subject
  • pencil
  • some acrylic paint

I found some nice side shots of my girls then with a bit of cropping I printed them out to 8×10 size & cut along the outside of the image. (include all those little wispy hair pieces, they’ll look great later)
*tip* If you have a great pic but your child is looking down use the “straighten” tool in your photo editing software, here’s what that looks like in Picasa

Next use your pencil to lightly trace around your image. Just use your non-writing hand to keep the image steady.

Now it’s as simple as painting inside the lines…

For those hair pieces I was talking about I just did some light quick strokes with a brush that was almost out of paint & slighly dry.

How easy was that??

Next I’m going to do silhouettes of the mutts. I’m thinking hot pink & lime green on little 3×5 canvases. How cute would that be displayed on a dresser?

Oh, & just in case you were wondering what those books on my nightstand were here’s a close-up…
And the face behind the books…I just keep telling myself that ONE DAY she WILL sleep. Either that or she’ll be old enough to take Ambien.

Last Minute Green

by Natasha on March 15, 2011 in st patrick's day dress, tutorials

If you’re like me at some point this week you’ll go, “Oh crap! St Patrick’s Day is this week, what’s my kid going to wear to school?” I’m still new to this whole preschool thing but I’m starting to pick up on the fact that if you’re kid is in school on a holiday they WILL have a party & I just can’t send Samster to a party without the appropriate attire now can I?
I whipped this little quickie up during Soph’s morning nap today. Which mind you was only 40 minutes long. Also everything you need you’ll find in a quick Target run, maybe even lurking around your house…The pattern is the Sienna Dress & was made using a Target holiday t-shirt along with some other tshirts in my stash. (tip- I made sure I used the already finished tshirt hem so I wouldn’t have to to hem the skirt or sleeves) Also I kept St Patrick’s Day fabric minimal b/c I’d like for her to wear this again. Mama doesn’t take the time to sew a dress for one time wear.

The legwarmers are done with this tutorial & a pair of socks I had in my drawer although yes, they do look like I snatched them off a leprechaun. The final touch is a little green flower in the dollar bin with an alligator clip hot glued to the back. You could also use a silk flower & my Big Bloom Baby Headband tutorial.

And just for fun…Hehe.

Princess Protege

by Natasha on March 14, 2011 in Uncategorized

“Princess Protege”
This week I want to…

*Finish infant “bug hat” & post pattern
*Get some sleep
(Sophie is driving me batty when it comes to sleep. Luckily she’s the happiest baby on the face of the earth the rest of the time but the kid won’t sleep more than 2/3 hr increments at night & has trouble napping longer than an hour. I think it’s her reflux. Or she’s got me dooped.)

*Find my way to the bottom of laundry mountain

What do you want to get done this week?

Elephant Applique

by Natasha on March 9, 2011 in Uncategorized

Ever get a onesie or tshirt that you love the pattern, color or softness of but it’s got a big ol’ logo smack in the middle? Solution: AppliqueI don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner, this onesie would’ve come in handy under Soph’s pink overalls awhile ago but I always hated the logo. Sorry Calvin.I didn’t take step by step photos but here are the basics…
1- Cut out elephant shape from pink fleece. Cut ear shape out of pink gingham cotton.
2- Apply Heat’n Bond to elephant & iron onto onesie
3- Apply Heat’n Bond to ear & iron onto elephant
4- Draw pink heart on ear with fabric marker
5- Embroider around entire applique & details
6- Apply Heat’n Bond Liteto the inside of the onesie to protect stitchwork
That was it!

Don’t sew? Don’t underestimate the potential of iron on patches. I bought this “S” Hello Kitty patch for Samster at JoAnn’s & just love how it looks on a plain white tee. (Not that you can see the applique very well, someone has figured out it’s fun to refuse to let mommy take decent picture)

Another tip for ya…
I didn’t like the way the original thread looked around the outline of the elephant so I colored it!
I used a dark pink fine tip sharpie & just colored in the thread. Sigh, much better.
(FYI- I would’ve used a fabric marker if I had one in the right color, sharpie will probably fade a bit after washing but I’m ok with that.)

Rainy Day

by Natasha on March 6, 2011 in Uncategorized

I’d like to try something new this week.
I find that every week I have all these ideas swimming around my head about projects I’d like to finish as well as mundane things to do. It feels like neither one ever get done & it’s bumming me out. So today, and every Sunday, I thought I’d try posting what I want to accomplish this week. Blogwise, personally, perhaps a recipe & maybe just a boring task. In the past when I’ve put my goals into writing I seem to be much more successful at actually doing them. Probably because putting it out there to others gives you that extra oomph to do it.
Nobody wants to be a lazy loser.
I also realize this may not be the most compelling thing I could blog about, in fact I can’t imagine most people would really care to hear my “list”, but that’s ok, this can just be something I post for me. (: And if you like it too, bonus.

I’m also going to throw in one picture that represents what the weekend was like. I love looking back through my blog & seeing what we were up to. Kind of like an online photo journal.“Rainy Day”

This week I hope to…
*Finish elephant applique onesie & post about it
*Do one load of laundry every day (doesn’t count if it’s not put away! I’m notorious for leaving the clean clothes folded in the basket all week)
*Call about our fireplace stank. Who do you call when your fireplace stinks?
*Get a pedicure

Do you make lists/goals for the week too? Do you keep them??

Pretty in Pink

by Natasha on March 5, 2011 in Uncategorized

There are lots of things I love that are pink…

Pink Champage…
Molly Ringwald…

Pink leopard wallet from LV (don’t burst my bubble here. And no that’s not my hand, google image)
And now, I love this…
Yep, that’s Amoxicillan.
Am I a terrible mother that there’s a part of me that’s happy when the Dr looks in her ears & says, “Yep, ear infection.” Perhaps “relieved” is a better word. At least then there’s a reason for the sleepless nights & miserable baby, more importantly there’s also a solution. The pink stuff.

This week I dragged both girls to the pediatrician because BOTH had not been sleeping & had been downright bitchy grumpy. Turns out Soph has her 1st ear infection & Samster has a sinus infection. (did you know kids can get these? I sure didn’t.) I also sent P to the Dr on Wednesday because he was being baby #3, turns out he has a sinus infection too. And what was he prescribed? Amoxicillan. Although not bubblegum flavored, which I know he was dissapointed about although he won’t admit it. And just to really drive home the “when it rains it pours” scenario I also sprained my ankle last week (perhaps a mod podged aircast is in the future? Kidding. Mostly.) & Sam came home from school with a brutal 12-hr stomach bug on Thursday. Poor kid yacked all over her beloved ‘Sleeping Doody’ doll. Sleeping Beauty earned herself a trip to the Samster Mommy salon & dry cleaners that day.But with all that I think my little family is finally on the mend. Both girls slept decently last night & we’re doing what we’re supposed to do on Saturday mornings…eating pink pancakes & staying in our pajamas until at least 10a.

A little bit of crafting did occur this week. During naptime yesterday I took 10 minutes to give this lamp a new coat of paint & a simple white shade from Target…Before:It wasn’t bad before but it wasn’t quite right either. I think the shade size/shape/texture was wrong. Regardless I changed the panels in my livingroom to green so a green lamp would’ve been too, well, green. The red is Krylon’s Cherry Red spray paint.

I’m determined to finish a few projects this week & blog about them…wish me luck!

IKEA Hackers

by Natasha on February 26, 2011 in Uncategorized

I love when I come across a new blog that I just can’t tear myself away from…

This is my latest new honey, www.ikeahackers.net
It’s basically a showplace of IKEA DIY makeovers, take that ‘Sluprenhoggen’ & turn it into an Anthropologie knock-off. LOVE IT! Here are a few to suck you in too…

IKEA Rast DresserSome paint, stain & new pulls…GORGEOUS!(Full makeover by Penny People Design)

Boring IKEA CabinetChic Decoupaged Armoire, LOVELY!(Full makeover details at Manhattan Craft Room)

I’m absolutely going to use this one in my playroom to hang Samster’s new preschool artwork collection we’ve been acquiring…Bungalow Insanity used a DEKA curtain rod & clips to hang her kid’s artwork.
Happy reading, try not to beat yourself up too much for neglecting that laundry pile just one more night…goodness knows I’m not.

(need more reading suggestions? here’s my favorite blog list)
