Bananahead Baby Hat (Free Pattern!)

by Natasha on October 18, 2010 in tutorials

Before I tell you about the hat can I force you to look at, I mean sharrrre with you a few pics of my little monster & mini monster?

(matching monster outfits are from Target)

I keep trying to think of a caption for that last photo but all I’m hearing are crickets. Can you come up with one??

Now onto the hat…
When we first moved to DC I didn’t know a soul however one of P’s new co-workers had heard I was into knitting. Being a fellow knitter she sent him home from his 1st day at work with a gift bag for me. It had some beautiful lilac yarn, knitting needles & a pattern for these awesome fingerless gloves. I instantly knew we’d be friends. (:

Lara moved to New York a few years ago but when Samster was born she made her the cutest baby hat. Now that it’s getting chilly Sophie’s inherited it & Lara was nice enough to let me share the free pattern with you guys.

This pattern is on Ravelry.com along with 1,000’s of other ones, many are free, go check it out. It’s completely free & just waiting to be your BFF. OH! And the fingerless gloves, they’re from knitty.com, yet another amazingly awesome freeeeee knitting website. Crafters sure are nice people.

I Don’t Know What I Want to Be Beef with Creamed Potatoes

by Natasha on October 18, 2010 in dinner 101

As a take off of my last post I thought it was only fitting to make this beef dish which is also suffering an identity crisis. It’s kind of beef stew meets beef bourguignon. The whole thing slow cooks until it’s divinely, fall apart tender & then is served over sweet & decadently creamy cream cheese mashed potatoes. (can you tell I’m hungry while typing this?)

Beef Ingredients:
2 lbs stew beef
1/2 bag baby carrots
1 package of whole button mushrooms
1 small sweet onion (chopped into large pieces)
3 garlic cloves (peeled)
1/4 cu or so of good red wine
1 cu flour
1/2 tbs or so of rosemary or thyme (or maybe both? I’ve made it with either one and they were both good)
2 bay leaves

In the morning after you’ve gotten all butts changed & mouths fed go ahead and get this sucker going. In a bowl heavily add salt & pepper to the flour, toss stew beef in flour, shake off excess & brown the beef in a skillet over med-hi heat with EVOO. (You’ll probably have to do this in a couple of batches, also don’t overcook the beef or it will be tough. You’re just browning the outside, it will mostly cook in the crock-pot) Set aside cooked beef & with pan still over medium heat add your red wine. Scrap off any brown bits off the bottom of the pan while the wine sizzles, those bits are the super yummy, flavorful stuff. By the time you’re done scraping the wine should have reduced by at least 1/2. Place beef in crock pot along with all of the other ingredients. Pour red wine mixture over top, season with salt & pepper, mix well & cook on low heat until beef falls apart. (around 6-8 hrs, stir once or twice during the day) Remove bay leaves before serving.

Creamiest Mashed Potatoes:
30 min before dinner boil 6 medium potatoes that have been peeled & quartered. (I used yellow potatoes) Boil until fork tender. Strain & return to pot. With a handheld mixer blend potatoes with 1/2 bar of cream cheese, season to taste with salt & pepper (this recipe is easily adjustable, just add more cream cheese to more potatoes…duh, I know.)

Serve beef & veggies over potatoes. Yummm…

When I Grow Up.

by Natasha on October 15, 2010 in Uncategorized

(WARNING: Possible Senseless Blabber Ahead)

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. I guess it’s just something about when life is changing. You’re going through a new adjustment period, it makes you reassess your life.
For those of you who have been around awhile you might remember several blabber posts after Samster was born. Perhaps it’s also a bit of crazy hormones & sleepless nights but whatever the reason I’ve been thinking & for some reason I want to write about it & share with you. (and the internet)

I don’t know why but lately I’m not happy with being a housewife.

Do I think being a stay at home mom is one of the hardest jobs on Earth?
Yes.

Do I think that raising good, smart, happy & well-loved children is one of the greatest contributions you can give society?
Absolutely.

But for some reason I still feel bad about being just a mom.

I’ve always had a hard time with finding my identity. In college I changed my major three times.

THREE.

1st was Marine Biology. I was going to train Flipper.

Next was Criminology. I wanted to be a hardcore yet sexy District Attorney & make the world a better place. This was coincidentally the same time that Law & Order was a really good show & only took place in one city. (L.A. Edition? Really? It’s time to let it go NBC.)

Finally I settled on Telecom Journalism. I was always good at public speaking & performing & since I wasn’t gung-ho enough to pack my bags to L.A. to be an actress a news anchor seemed like a good, stable option. I was actually really good at it. Best in my class if I’m allowed to brag a bit. But I was too scared of failing, when it came time to send out our reels for job opportunities I found every excuse not to. I procrastinated until after graduation & then took a job in Marketing because “I had to pay the bills”. (That was my excuse for not pursuing what would really make me happy, I had to be responsible & realistic. Rent was due after all. But if I was honest it was just out of fear that gave up so easily)

And that brings us to today. A few marketing & PR jobs later, that I was more than happy to give up, & I’m home raising two beautiful, wonderful little girls.

I know I’m incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to stay home. I know this. Please don’t take this post as me not knowing how good I have it. It’s just that when I see people and they ask what I’m up to nowadays I feel a little bit of shame to say I’m a stay-at-home mom. Why is that?
Sometimes I think the person I’m talking to is thinking “Oh. Well, looks like she married well & took the easy way out. What a waste.” Isn’t that terrible?! But for some reason I think these crazy things.

The other day I was watching the Today show & they were doing a blurb on the cartoonist who draws “Cathy”. She was talking about how she started the cartoon by drawing little pictures of funny things in her life & sending them to her parents. She sent the collection to an editor on a whim & the comic strip was born. I actually caught myself thinking, “Aha! I could do that! I’ll draw comics of my crazy life with babies (poopsplosions would make great content) & will finally have a job I love, that I can be proud of, & that I can do while still being a stay at home mommy. Perfect!” Then I thought about how the conversation would go when I tell P that I no longer want to be a lactation consultant (job #24) & I’m going to be a cartoonist. I can see the eye rolls now. Although that’s not really fair, one thing my husband has always been is incredibly supportive of every job I’ve tried. It’s actually really sweet. He’s pretty darn awesome. But see, this is what happens, I think I’ll fail or people will think I’m silly & then I just don’t try. Ugh.

Does anyone else have a dream still of what they want to be when they grow up?

I’m 30, is it time to just accept my path & learn to appreciate it instead of wishing I had something else?

Is this all a selfish rant? I should be focusing on my kids, right?

Do I have “grass is greener” syndrome where I always think I’ll be happy if I was just doing something else or is it just that I haven’t found my passion yet & as soon as I do it will *click* & I’ll finally feel like I’m doing what I was meant to do.

Is this all just nonsensical blabber? Is that even a word?

Am I going to regret publishing this post for all to see?

Am I talking too much?

Yes. That one I know the answer to. Time to hit publish & have a glass of wine. Oh wait, it’s 2pm. I suppose a soda would be a nice treat too. And a brownie. Yum.

Life (unedited)

by Natasha on October 4, 2010 in Uncategorized

Over the weekend I felt like I needed to organize something. It didn’t really matter what, I just needed to sort, organize, color code…something! So I went for my recipes. They had been stashed in this accordion looking folder. Everything was just stuffed in & I never ended up using any recipes that were further back than the first fold.So at our last Target run I picked up a pretty binder, (school supplies are on clearance now…bonus!) some clear pocket thingies with 3 holes on the side & dividers. Then I organized all my recipes according to the main ingredient. Chicken, pork, beef, pasta, veggies…This made me feel sooo much better. (exhale…whewwwww..)
I’m a geek, I’m know.

But before you go thinking, “Oh my, how does she do it? Two kids & time to organize recipes?? I can barely get my teeth brushed!” Take a gander at the rest of my life…unedited…

The livingroom…Well surely with downstairs being such a mess upstairs must have been cleaned, let’s take a look…
I believe this scraggly-haired mismatched beast is Samster.
Although she’s a mess at least her room is clean…
Well, maybe at least Mommy’s room is clean. After all, your bedroom is your sanctuary…Hmm, well maybe the bed is made?Maybe not.
Perhaps the laundry is done…
Oh dear, well surely all the time has gone to that sweet new baby. She must be neatly swaddled in her own bed…

Orrrr she’s napping in the bathroom because the hairdryer on full blast is the only way she’ll let mommy put her down.

You see, really, I’m dying from the chaos & organizing my recipes is just a tiny way to get control. A little corner of the house that’s sorted, divided, cleaned out & color-coded. Do what you need to do to survive, that’s my new motto.

Hope that’s not too deep for Monday morning. Just go ahead and cancel your therapist appt for the week, you got your dose from Samster Mommy.

You’re welcome.

Knit Fall Dresses

by Natasha on September 27, 2010 in tutorials

Did I sew every day for an hour like you’re supposed to for the Kids Clothes Week Challenge?

No. Not even close.

BUT, I did sew & as my new sewing/mommy/coffee&winedrinkingbuddy Susan from Crafterhours told me at our little 1st playdate get together, “I think you get a pass”. (BTW, how stupidly awesome is it that one of my favorite craft bloggers moved to my area? Insanely lucky, right?!)

So, I did sew. And it was probably for an hour each day for 3 days if you added up all the quickie 15 minute trips to the craft room that I was able to snag before Sophie decided it was time to eat…again. And here’s what I ended up with, two little knit t-shirt dresses for Samster’s Fall wardrobe…

(tee from Old navy)(tee from men’s dept at Target, thanks for the tip Brooke!)(This is what I get when I tell Sam to “smile”)

I also got about 90% done with a knit top for me, pics of that to come. (Hopefully.)

No sewing for Sophie yet, I’m a little perplexed as to how you sew for a newborn. She really just wears those little footed sleepers everyday & they seem like they’d be a lot of work considering you can buy a pack of them for $5 at Target.

I do want to try making Samster a fleece long sleeved dress & was toying around with the idea of some coordinating fleece overalls for the little one…now that I think about it that might just work. Hmmm…

Did any of you guys participate in the sewing challenge?

"Perfect Bow" Lace Headbands

by Natasha on September 22, 2010 in tutorials

Awhile back a nice company called Bra Components sent me an email asking “if they were to send me a package of their elastic lace products could I use them for some sort of crafting project?”

Um, yeahhhh.

You could send me a bag of zip ties & I’ll find something to do with it.
They of course would like it if I blogged about their product but if I wasn’t completely happy with it I didn’t have to. No strings attached. Lucky for me what they sent me was AWESOME & I can honestly say I would’ve totally spent my own money of it.When Samster was a little balding beauty I looked all over for pretty colors of lace elastic to make her headbands out of & had such a hard time finding them. If only I had known about Bra Components…such pretty colors & it’s a really nice quality elastic, very soft so it’s perfect for little heads.

When my family was here my sister whipped up a bunch of these & over the weekend I went a little crazy making them too. Once I got started I just couldn’t stop & ended up with all these hair supplies by the end of naptime. (jewels for clips & felt flowers are from my own random supplies) I know this isn’t very hard but I thought I’d give you a quick tutorial nonetheless for making the perfect bow headband. Start off by cutting a piece of elastic that’s the circumference of the person’s head where they wear their headband. If it’s a gift perhaps these measurements will help…

Newborn 12″
Infant 14″
Toddler/Child 16″
Adult 18″

Next either hand or machine stitch the two ends together. (with right sides facing together)For the embellishments the skies the limit but here’s my secret to making a perfect bow.

Start off with a piece of elastic that’s 4″ long. Bring in the two short ends so they meet in the center, stitch into place. Next take another piece of elastic that’s 3″ long and tie a knot (not too tight) in the center of it. Using a small dab of glue or your needle & thread attach the knot to the center of your previous piece. Layer your pieces together like this, headband on the bottom, 4″ piece in the middle & knotted piece on top. (lay the center of your 4″ piece over the seam of the headband if you want to hide the seam) You’ll have two ends hanging off of each side of your knotted piece. Use these one at a time to tightly wrap down & around the other two pieces. Stitch or glue into place. You’ll have a perfect faux bow that also covers your stitches from the headband. How easy was that?

I made this pink one by doing a faux bow out of felt strips & using two thin headband elastics.
I have to say I’m cautiously optimistic that maybe we’re getting in a bit of a routine around here. The last couple of days Sophie has slept in 4 hr increments during the night (I never thought that 4 hours of sleep would sound so very sweet) & has napped around the same time as Samster in the afternoon. Hence the headbands & an actual blog post.

So now I’m gonna go & get greedy…

After reading about a few of you doing this I decided to go ahead & sign up for the “kids clothes challenge week“…
The idea is that you set aside an hour every day to sew clothes for your little ones. The weather’s been starting to cool off around here & honestly, every night I go to sleep dreaming about what long-sleeve knit dresses & legwarmers I’m DYING to make Samster for the fall. I thought this might give me the extra little push I need to go ahead & get them done. Yes, I should probably be sleeping that hour or you know, showering, but you know what? Crafting is my time so this is going to be a little present to me. (:

So far I’m counting the headbands as Sunday’s sewing project & last night I actually got to sew an entire dress for Samster! I can’t wait to show it to you but I’m going to save it for a very special playdate we’re having tomorrow. Hopefully our new crafty friend will be ever so kind as to let me blog about our little get together. (wink wink)
Whew, after all that excitement now I’m spent.

SMA Blog Party, please vote!

by Natasha on September 16, 2010 in Uncategorized

I got an email last night from Samster Mommy reader Kendra, she said she needed my blog help and needed it quickly.

Here’s what she wrote…

Hi Natasha, I found your blog a while back and just love it! You have the best ideas and cutest stuff you feature. Its rather addicting! I continue to follow you blog and love everything you do. I’m writing for a bit of an urgent request. I lost my little girl Makenzie Rye last December. She passed away from a rare neuromuscular disease called SMARD- another form of the more common- SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) Its known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease in infants. SMA is the #1 genetic killer of infants. Since Makenzie passed away I have been rallying around to help in anyway possible. We are close to finding a cure. Close enough that researchers think there will be a cure within the next 5-10 years. This is huge! The reason I’m writing and titled this email as URGENT, was because tomorrow Thursday Sept. 16 we are having what’s called the SMA Blog Party! We are asking everyone to post about the same thing on the same day and help spread the word about SMA and also help us in The Jimmie Johnson Samsung Helmet of Hope For More. We are hoping with enough votes we can win the $20,000 for SMA research.
This is a short email with a lot of information. To find out more about my family you can visit our blog- I also have information on the blog party.
kendraandryanwebster.blogspot.com

And what really got me was the picture of her beautiful little family when I went to her blog, don’t they look like they could be any one of us?? So everyone, can we help this girl out today?

To vote for her foundation to get the $20,000 for research go to VoteForSMA.com, select the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation, enter the two security words, check the Official Rules box, and then click “Vote Now!” That’s it!

Sophie has the sniffles & Samster had bad dreams all night (she woke up crying, “No! My paint! I do it! Mine!!” ) but then after reading about a family who has lost so much I realized that I should be grateful for my sleepless night with my two beautiful girls. Today let’s all hug our little ones a little closer & let the small stuff roll off our backs.

Bathroom Makeover!

by Natasha on September 14, 2010 in Uncategorized

Thank goodness I was able to finish 99% of the work that went into remodeling our master bath while Baby Sophie was still in utero. I never would’ve been able to handle it now. I know the befores aren’t too terribly bad but they were super bland. Standard builder-grade white tile & cheapo fixtures. Zero personality. When we had some water damage back in May I was actually grateful because it meant we finally had a good reason to tear it all up & start over!

Sooo, here’s my big reveeeeal, I’m SO excited!!!

BEFORE:AFTER:*Tip* You can find great ceramic tiles that still give the same effect as glass ones. The little blue mosaic tiles I used in the shower & the back wall behind the vanity were $4.99 sq ft. I had originally wanted glass mosaic until I priced them out at $17.99 sq ft! YOWCH! Now that it’s done though I absolutely love it & am so glad I didn’t splurge on glass. Also shop around for tile, I went to several tile stores & brought home different samples to place around the room until I found the perfect combo. Many stores will let you return the samples & refund your money too.

BEFORE:AFTER:*Tip* Do your homework. I really wanted to have two showerheads in our shower, one normal one & one that we could bathe the kids with. The thing is I wanted to be able to run them both at the same time so no one would get cold. Some stores told me I couldn’t do that unless I bought a pricey wall showering unit with all the different nozzles. Sorry, but that just wasn’t in the budget. I kept digging and found out you can use a type of “t-valve” in the plumbing so the water can run to different outlets. The extra showerhead was the only cost! And let me tell you, the two showerheads are my FAVORITE part of this bathroom. Not only can Samster & I shower together without one of us shivering in the corner but when I don’t want to get my hair wet I simply shower with only the lower placed showerhead on. It’s right at shoulder level so the hair stays dry! LOVE. IT.

BEFORE:AFTER:*Tip* Do be afraid to rip some stuff up! You can see in the before shot that we had a drop in tub with a pretty wide tile tub deck around it. If our bathroom was huge then yeah, a tub deck could be useful but our bathroom is actually pretty small. Two people have to wiggle past eachother between the tub & the vanity. That’s why I went out on a limb & decided to ditch the tub deck completely & replace it with a stand alone one. A note on the tub– although it looks like a cast-iron vintage clawfoot tub it’s actually a light-weight acrylic replica. Much cheaper & no reinforced floor necessary for the weight! I ordered mine from vintagetub.com & had a really good experience.

*Tip* Decorate with unexpected objects. I really wanted to keep the bathroom clean & simple but still wanted a pop of color here & there. One way I found was to buy a whole bunch of pretty colored soaps & store them in a glass jar. (P is having a hard time understanding what “just for pretty” means & why he can’t use soap that’s in a bathroom…but that’s another story) I found these at the Whole Foods, they have so many scents which was good for me because that meant a big color selection. Also a note about the glass jars, I had originally wanted the ones below from Pottery Barn but they’re super overpriced. I was thrilled when I found mine at Target for about $6 each, and you’ll never guess where…in the kitchen storage aisle! I know, go figure. Honestly, they look like the same darn glass jars to me.The walls are painted in Martha’s “Chinchilla” color from Home Depot. Which brings me to my last tip, after many hissy fits from spending hours painting a room & hating the color I now always, ALWAYS, buy a handful of sample cans & put them all on the walls. (try all the walls so you can see the paint in different lights) I put 6 different shades of gray on the walls to get the right one & let me tell you, those darns paint chips looked nothing like the what they did on the wall. The one I chose wasn’t even one of my favorites & the one I loved ended up looking like concrete. Which, I suppose is my point exactly. On a different note…

We did in fact get out last Thursday! (see last post) We didn’t make it to Target but that’s only because we ended up joining 7 other kids for a massive park & lunch outing. It was so much fun & even though that many kids was utter chaos it was wonderful to get to be around other moms. Also their kids were even crazier than mine which made me feel better. (;

Samster perfecting her pout. She’s become quite the thespian.

I will leave my house today.

by Natasha on September 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

My mom & sisters came to visit over Labor Day weekend and since driving my mom to the airport on Monday I haven’t left the house. (Well, we did walk to the park yesterday…does that count?)

I’m not sure if that’s really sad or just self preservation.

But not today! (shaking fist in air)

Sophie slept in 3hr increments last night and that little bit of extra sleep (she had been feeding every hour and a half) is just the oomph I needed to put on my big girl panties & attempt to get out with two kids. The goal is a trip to Target & one of Samster’s favorite parks. The weather today is sunny, breezy & a high of 80. I have no excuse. And just look at this face! Who could be intimidated by such a little angel?I just wanted to let you know because I thought if I put it out there in cyberspace then I’d be more likely not to chicken out after dressing one kid…

I don’t know why but going from 1 kid to 2 is so much harder than it was going from 0 to 1. But in a different way, when I had Samster there was a lot of emotional hardness to get through. Fear of taking care of someone so needy, handling the roller coaster emotions of becoming a parent…and this time I don’t have any of that (well, I have been hit by the rogue estrogen wave here & there) but what I wasn’t prepared for this time was how physically exhausted I’d be.

I can honestly say I’m working harder than I’ve ever worked in my life.

Like hard labor camp working hard.

Everyday is go, go, go until bedtime. And even bedtime isn’t a break to be honest, there’s still someone beckoning you every couple of hours. Last night I just went downstairs to make a frozen meal right before bed (I had nursed Sophie during dinner & somehow forgot to actually eat MY meal) & as soon as I popped that puppy in the microwave I heard her start crying. She was with her daddy but I could tell the cry was escalating & just knew he was getting the look of extreme panic on his face. At this age daddies try their best but I think most of them just don’t know what to do when that little scream can’t be calmed. No? I came upstairs and said, “Oh, I thought I heard someone calling my name.”

Really, screaming kids has become my calling card.

Most days I really don’t mind, honest I don’t, but last night it was just too much. I’m overwhelmed. When I talk to my girlfriends who have multiple kids they say they felt the same way so it seems to just be par for the course, I guess this is the “adjustment period” everyone talks about. I crave my sewing time, what I wouldn’t give to lock myself in my craft room for a few hours. This weekend my in-laws are coming to meet Sophie so maybe I’ll get a little break, just maybe…

Anyway, I really didn’t set out to make this post a big ol’ pity party. Life is good, I’m very very blessed & remind myself of that often. At Sophie’s last pediatrician appointment the Dr. reminded P & I that life will get easier and babies start becoming fun at around 8 weeks, just to try & survive until then. (We hadn’t complained to her but it must’ve been written on our faces)

Here’s a few snip-its of our home…

I’ve been letting Samster dress herself lately because I don’t have the energy to fight the “My DO IT!” demands. This was her “printhess” ensemble the other day…perhaps another reason we haven’t left the house…obviously she’s oblivious to the standard “shirt & shoes required” store policies.
And Daddy having a “dance party” with his girls while I made dinner…
As for the blog I hope you don’t mind that it’s become more mommy blog slanted & less projects & recipes for now. (cooking? what’s that?) I actually did do one tutorial while my family was here, now I just need to edit the photos & write the post. (With some projects the actually writing of the post is more time consuming than the craft) I’m determined to get back to my crafting at some point soon, the ideas are starting to run crazy in my head & I’ve got a major itch to start getting some done. Or at least something done soon. If only someone would write a tutorial on how to make more time. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Mom Haircut

by Natasha on September 6, 2010 in Uncategorized

Shortly after Sam was born I got the itch to cut off all my hair. Everyday I just plopped it up in a loose bun, a ponytail on a good day, & it really made me feel so frumpy. I thought if it was a cute short cut than at least I would feel somewhat stylish in my baby biorn & lounge pants…P had different feelings about the decision…

He HATED it.

Said it was a “mom cut” (although mind you it was based on a super cute Katie Holmes haircut but, whatever.) Here’s a pic from then…(how cute is little Samster?!)When we found out I was pregnant with Chums he made me promise not to cut it all off again. Although I gotta say, I’ve been really tempted to chop it off because this time it only took 1 week after Sophie was born before I started getting that same frumpy itch. I decided some fun bangs would be a nice compromise. Added bonus about bangs is that whenever I wear my hair up (which is um, EVERYDAY) I still feel like it looks cute.

(Samster is watching Yo Gabba Gabba & has zero interest in doing anything else)
“Sam can you at least put down your cup?”
“Cheeeeeeeese!”
(and no, despite the way she looks in that last picture I assure you there is no hunch in her punch)

Want bangs? Here’s a few cute celeb pics that you can print out and take to your hairdresser if you get the itch. The first of Zooey Deschanel is the one I used… Also can you see the cute lace bow headband on Sophie? I’ll show you a tutorial for it in the next couple of days, my sisters were in town for the weekend and we whipped up a bunch of baby headbands…super cute!
