Crap-Pot

by Natasha on November 11, 2009 in Uncategorized

Ok, that actually sounds like a gross outhouse reference but “Crap-Pot” is what we lovingly called my Crock-Pot last night after I served my family Cherry & Blue Cheese Cardboard.
It was intended to be Cherry & Blue Cheese Turkey Meatloaf which sounds oh so yummy but the end result was anything but.
See, it looked good going in…
Smelled DELISH!
Even doesn’t look TOO bad once we sliced it open but man, talk about dry, tough & the texture of paper. ICK! Also the cherries & blue cheese were way too overwhelming. In hindsight it might have saved the dish to cut back on the fillings, & cook it on low for 6 hrs verses high for 4 which I did.
Oh well, Samster was quite happy with our backup plan of Mcdonald’s chicken nuggets & Caliyogurt’s tart frozen yogurt. Bad Mommy… (;
Tonight my week of crock-potting will be applesauce chicken, got my finger’s crossed!

    I have practically given up on my crock pot for anything besides chili, spaghetti sauce, and hot dips. 🙁 I have yet to make anything that wasn't a soup or stew that my family thought was worth making a second time. Do you have a good slow cooker cookbook that you like? Good luck with the applesauce chicken, by the way – that sounds good. 🙂

    And chicken nuggets does not equal bad mommy. 🙂 We're a rather reasonably healthy family, but I'm starting to relax on the occasional junk food snack or meal. I think that GOOD parents feed their children, period. 🙂 And besides, my 3.5 y/o still asks for any number of his favorite dishes that I make (like black beans and rice, or spinach and tomato pasta) way more than he asks for hamburgers, pizza, or chef boyardee! 🙂

    Did you put any liquid in with the meatloaf? When cooking it in the oven for 1-1 1/2 hours, it doesn't normally need additional moisture, but when slow cooking it for a long period of time it does. Because it was turkey, you could of added some chicken stock to the pot, the meatloaf would have absorbed a lot of it and left it juicy. Just a tip.

    I agree with Angela – especially with Ground Turkey as it doesn't have enough fat in it to stay juicy by itself in a crock pot. I did potato soup in mine yesterday – YUMM and I have leftovers for lunch! Perfect rainy day food! Can't wait to see the applesauce chicken. I've been on a crockpot kick lately too – my fam LOVED the italian seasoned chicken you posted awhile back!
