Personalized Birthday Girl Dress

by Natasha on April 11, 2012 in tutorials

So now that you know the ‘real stuff’ that’s going on in my life let’s get back to the superficial, warm & fuzzy crafty goodness, shall we? (btw, I made ‘cookies of peace’ last night. P & I have this thing where when we’re in one of those fights where no one’s really saying anything for days, you’re both cordial but not really speaking either, one of us will make cookies after the kid’s go to bed and it’s kind of the universal peace offering. We both know that you don’t turn down cookies of peace. You drop your guard, soften up a bit and gain a few calories together. TOGETHER being the key word. So that was nice.)

One of Sam’s best little friends is Kendall. She is just the sweetest 3 year old you’ll ever meet and she & Sam truly love each other. I wanted to do something special for her birthday so I made her a dress…

I used Lil Blue Boo’s Recycled Shirt Pattern & my Silhouette machine to make the iron-on vinyl cut-outs. If you’re a crafter and can ask for that machine for a present then do it my friend. Or heck, buy it for yourself. It saved me a good 45 minutes of tracing my designs onto freezer paper and then painstakingly cutting them out with an exacto knife. LOVE IT. Justify it by all the money you’ll save making gifts for people instead of buying them. I doubt it actually adds up but it’s a decent sounding excuse nonetheless.

I realized at the last minute that I hadn’t bought a birthday card I had the lovely idea to have Sam make a hand-made gift tag instead of a card. Have you googled ‘printable coloring pages’ before? Why did I not think of this sooner?? Whenever the girls are on a kick about something (this week it was butterflies & trashtrucks…go figure) I just google ‘printable butterfly coloring pages’ and wah-lah, it’s like a new coloring book every time! Not to mention cut out your little one’s masterpiece, slap it on some construction paper and you have an instant hand-made gift tag. I love when I do things that actually make me feel smart. It assures me that Dora hasn’t succeeded in her mission to suck out all my living brain cells.

Cookies of peace!!! Natasha I love that idea! Your post about being transparent was so real for so many people including myself. So glad you two made up. Fights are thee worst. The cookies are a sweet idea for a truce.

How did Kendal like the dress? Super cute!

I am just seeing this post for the first time!
    1) I know we thanked you at the time, but thank you again…it is so cute.
    2) Thank you for the compliment about Kendall.
    3) Kendall loves Sam too. We need to set up a play date soon. Kendall really misses being in the same class at school. 🙁
