Falling Dots Heart Sweatshirt

by Natasha on February 6, 2012 in tutorials

When you have a super girly girl who’s obsessed with pink, hearts & anything frilly a Valentine’s school party seemed like such a good excuse to make her something new…I was inspired by this bag from V & Co & made the sweatshirt from an XXL men’s sweatshirt I picked up at Target. I used this hoodie pattern from lil blue boo (my go to pattern that I know is quick & super easy) & to make the project go by extra fast I used the existing cuffs, hem ribbing & hood.

The whole project start to finish took 2 hours. Right inside that glorious Sophie naptime window. The dots were done by ironing on a freezer paper heart stencil as a guide & then I dotted fabric paint with an eraser tip. So easy, right? I’m loving this technique, perhaps a shamrock with ombre greens next month??

And in case you’re wondering what Sam was doing to keep herself busy…She’s says it’s a dress for Soph. Yes it looks like a pediatric hospital gown but the thought is sweet. I told her it was beautiful.

Aww look at that dress! You’ve taught her well!! Love the hoodie too, I need to get over my fear of making hoodies, I have two XL hoodies that I picked up for cheap years ago and they are still sat waiting to be made into baby sized cos the thought is too scary atm haha!

Hoodies are so easy! They were such a nice surprise, I actually find them easier than sewing a ribbed collar. Try it!

No plain hoodies for kids huh? Ombre is so in 😉 Love how she’s being just like mommy. She’s such a big girl now!

I’m totally impressed that she’s draping already. She’s way ahead of me! 🙂 Call it a muslin to refine the fit, and maybe figure out a way to actually use her design. Bet it’d make her awfully proud. Just a thought. Rowena over at rostitchery.com has some great thoughts on sewing with small children.

[…] If you’ve never done freezer paper stenciling this would be a great first project. I used my Silhouette machine to cut a heart stencil out of freezer paper but you could easily cut a heart shape on your own. (just like I did for this dotted heart sweatshirt) […]
