T-shirt Mermaid Dress

by Natasha on March 30, 2012 in tutorials

As you know Sam is obsessed, OBSESSED, with all things princess. Under that princess umbrella ballerinas, mermaids & fairies are included. Of course.

This is why I was not surprised in the least that when her teacher told her they could dress in costume for their ‘Pirate Party’ she negotiated that mermaids should be acceptable attire. How she rationalized this I’m not exactly sure but I am darn proud of her for finding a way. Where there’s a will…

I couldn’t exactly send her to school in her full mermaid costume, that tail isn’t exactly playground conducive, so a new outfit was in order. (thank goodness I actually made this a week ago before Soph got sick, I love the rare occasion when I plan ahead. Note to self, plan ahead more)

She’s such a ham. Love that kid.

The mermaid portion of the shirt is from an abercrombie tshirt my mom picked up awhile ago, I had the blue knit & tulle on hand. I made sooo many mistakes making this dress. Some times you just have to go with it. Don’t give up. I cut things, restitched them & totally winged it. (hence the ribbon drawn neckline instead of the intended ribbing) Sometimes it works out though. And sometimes you stay up until 3a trying to make a project work that you should’ve buried a long time ago. Lucky for me, and my little mermaid, this one worked out well.

The party was so much fun by the way. I had every intention of dropping Sam off and running a few quick errands during her party but I stuck around and ended up doing face painting. It was awesome. Those kids are darn cute. Snotty, but cute. I really need to spend more time at her school…

(ps- her blue & green hair streaks are from this chalk-dying tutorial. I did them for her the morning of, took all of 5 minutes and she loved them)

Super cute. Does she watch “Jake & the Neverland Pirates” or has she seen “Peter Pan”? I bet that’s where she got the mermaid justification, since they have a cove in Neverland. Smart girl with her negotiating…you may have a future lawyer on your hands.
