Hungry? DIY Mockingjay pin

by Natasha on March 23, 2012 in tutorials

I don’t read a lot of books.

This isn’t something I’m proud of but it’s true. I love the act of reading so I have dozens of books that I’ve attempted to read but I all too often get bored, skip sentences & inevitably end up never picking the darn thing up again. Not so much with “The Hunger Games”. Not at all in fact. I flew threw it finishing the first book in a few nights & promptly moving on to the 2nd & 3rd. I’m actually not a big ‘young adult’ literature fan. I’ve never seen any Harry Potter movies, nor have any desire to, & although I do enjoy the Twilight movies when they come on pay per view I didn’t like the books. I’m pretty sure ‘New Moon’ is sitting around here somewhere half-read & covered in dust. But this, this my friends is good stuff. And I hate apocalyptic tales, they freak me out but I don’t know, I guess the story & writing is just THAT GOOD.

All that to say I’m more than excited to see the movie. I’m a full-force big dork watching trailors on youtube.

And the premiere is tonight.

{head explodes}

I live a somewhat mundane life (and like it that way) so when I have something to get giddy over I’m going all out with it. I don’t think P would’ve taken me to the sneak if I was sporting a bow & arrow or full leather bodysuit so I compromised by making my own mockingjay pin, the badge of our heroine Katniss Everdeen.

This is a really simple project if you have a cutting machine. If you don’t then maybe just print out a picture of the pin?

I found the image on google, used the trace function in the Silhouette to outline the perimeter & then used some heavy gold cardstock for the paper. Hot glue on a safety pin & watch out, you’re ready to battle to the death. (so grim, right?)I realize that a pin which represents a televised reality show where starving children are forced to fight one another TO DEATH is not exactly appropriate for placing on a baby. I know this. But I had on no makeup & my hair was greasy…there will be no self-modeling.

I made a few extra pins that I’m going to take with me tonight. If you won tickets through the radio station to go to the sneak premiere of the movie tonight then come find me & I’ll totally slip you one. Just say something really dorky like “may the games be ever in your favor” & I’ll nod my head in fellow dork recognition & pin you.

I can’t help but fear that I might be one small step away from dressing up & attending some fan conference. If I do you know what to do. Intervention.

    I didn’t even pick up the books until two weeks ago, but now I am going nuts waiting for my husband to read them so we can see the movie.

    I’d go with you (decked out mom style in black pants, riding boots and hoodies) with our crafty mockingjay pins.

    I heard you talking about this on the radio this morning, and was hoping it meant you’d be blogging about it! Do not let your husband make you feel ashamed about wearing it to the movie! I rocked my “Team Peeta” shirt loud and proud at the midnight premiere last night, and was SO not the only one wearing my colors! 😀

    Too cute and funny. I would just say if your husband is making fun, then he is just jealous because he cannot rock it like you can! lol Hope you have fun at the movie. I seriously have never heard of The Hunger Games….so I guess I am the nerdy one now!

    I went to the midnight showing last night and wore a gray jersey dress with gray legging (ya know coal district 12) and braided my hair like Katniss so, You are totally ok with your pin! 🙂

    Loved the movie! IT was totally worth getting less then 3 hours of sleep last night!

    J and I rarely go to the movies, but we went “all out” with a noon date on Sunday –hot dogs, large popcorn, candy, and cokes. Now I wish I had one of your crafty pins to top off the occasion! The movie was soooooo good! Can’t wait for 2 & 3 now.
