PINBUSTERS! Microwaved popcorn in brown paper bag

by Natasha on May 22, 2012 in pinbusters

Thanks for dealing with my Debbie Downer post yesterday. It was a hard weekend & I’m sure I’ll elaborate at some point (because I can never keep my darn mouth shut) but for now it wouldn’t be appropriate since you know, it’s the internet and all. Bah.

So in the meantime let’s just pull a total 180 and do something ridiculously chipper like a video of making popcorn with an insanely cute 3 year old.

*Pinbusters is a new series where I take those favorite, popular pins & see if they really work as great as they look…check out the rest of my Pinbusters videos here

I love microwave popcorn but I’ve found that 1- the portions are too big for a late night snack alone, 2- they’re filled with either scary saturated fat laden chemicals or taste like cardboard. Not to mention it’s kind of expensive when you think about how many servings you get verses if you buy a big bottle of kernels. All that to say when I saw this pin that suggested you could make amazing microwave popcorn with just a brown paper bag & some kernels I wondered…could it really be true??

In all honesty, we make this in the evenings at least 3 times a week. Best. Pin. EVER.

I put around a 1/4 cu (if that) of kernels in the bag and then I season the entire thing with extra virgin olive oil (you’ll be amazed at how much you don’t even miss the butter) & coarse salt. I give Sam her bowl & then I give the remainder a drizzle of truffle oil & a handful of parmesan cheese. OHMYGOSH IT IS SO CRAZY GOOD! You know I wouldn’t lie to you, buy some truffle oil (it’s by the olive oil). It’s like $10 for a small bottle & you’re going to stand there looking at it in the grocery store saying, “what the heck Natasha, I’m so not paying for that. I don’t even know what it is.” but then you’ll buy it anyway because you’re a little curious & I’m literally raving about it. You’ll bring it home, drizzle it on your popcorn & then sit down to write me a 3 page email thanking me for bringing it into your life. Well, you’ll intend to write it but you actually won’t get around to it & that’s totally ok because, I know my friend, I know.

I never thought of truffle oil on my popcorn. Brilliant! My fav is I put a couple dashes in some mayo for a “truffle aioli” (because mayo is an aioli when you want to be fancy) and dip french fries in it. Add in a glass of wine and that’s one classy single girl dinner 😉

I make popcorn using the method regularly! I suggest you get the regular paper lunch bags, you have more room in the bag and then you could save the ziplock bag step. You can add toppings right into the paper bag. I use black pepper and parm cheese. Yum!

Oh that’s true, I didn’t think of that I’d have more room!

    I do mine like this:
    http://www.theyummylife.com/blog/2011/02/146/Homemade+Microwave+Popcorn+-+Healthier%2C+Cheaper%2C+%26+Greener
microwave popcorn without even using the brown bags! (Which are not approved for food-use, and could be a fire hazard. Just a glass mixing bowl and a plastic microwave food cover from walmart, about $2-3. It works great! I have found that my medium mixing bowl is better than the large one – probably builds up the pressure better or something? Anyways, click on the link – she has a lot of details about it and explains better than I have.

Hmmm, sounds good except what about those scary plastic leaching chemicals that get into your food in the mircrowave??

      • Sarah

        June 14, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Well I’m certainly no expert, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for being cautious, but I believe that the plastics used to manufacture microwave food covers (specifically labeled in store for use in microwaves) have been deemed safe by the FDA. I think a lot of plastic containers nowadays are considered safe for use in microwave – you just have to look and see if it has the microwave safe symbol on the bottom. However, many types of paper products, including brown paper bags, are not labeled safe for cooking/heating, and may release chemicals themselves.

Again – I’m not an expert, this is just information I’ve gotten from internet searches. Another option is to use a glass mixing bowl and cover it with a plate – making sure to leave a small vent by positioning it off the the side just a bit, or waxed paper with a couple of holes poked in top, secured with a rubber band, or a paper plate – I’ve done that too – I found some paper plates that fit perfectly over my bowl and the ridges on the side provided just enough ventilation to prevent an explosion but still built up the necessary pressure.

I like my microwave cover method because it’s easy and creates no waste, but in the end, the main point is that there are a lot of ways to get the job done without resorting to buying the expensive, chemical-laden, unhealthy manufactured microwave popcorn bags.

Hope this long response isn’t too obnoxious! Thanks for doing these pinbusters! They’re so fun and Sam is way cute in the videos! My daughter loved watching it.

My mom used to make popcorn like this all the time when I was little.

Featuring little Sam in these videos just make them that much more fun to watch!
As a popcorn lover, who hates the serving size a regular bag makes, I cannot wait to give this healthier and smaller serving a try. Keep the pinbuster videos a’comin’!

If you get popcorn on the cob you can do this and it pops right off the cob. When you pull it out (VERY CAREFULLY IT WILL BE HOT), there is popcorn in your bag and still stuck to the cob which looks super cool. I blogged about it a while ago http://icnh.blogspot.com/2010/11/popcorn-on-cob.html I get mine as a “reward” when the toddler I work with helps “feed” the animals at this local farm/park. I’ve never seen any signs that the bag is getting hot or starting to burn.

How much fun would that be?? I bet it tastes crazy good to since the kernels won’t be all dried out

you should test out the whole- “write with a sharpie on ceramic and bake it to make it stay” idea(http://pinterest.com/pin/118641771403991602/). i keep seeing it, but am VERY skeptical… i would LOVE to decorate some dollar store plates and mugs, but don’t want it to wash off.

Here’s my vote for the next Pinbusters! http://pinterest.com/pin/267893877804801427/ If this works, it could be life changing! or, you know, something less dramatic.
